About This Piece

This is a gorgeous piece, and packs all the best transferware style in a sauce tureen size, with underplate. Made by John & William Ridgway, c. 1813–1830, in Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire.

The pattern is from the 1713 engraving by Matteo Ripa based on a painting by Shen Yu. The caption under the engraving reads "The Figure of Heaven is all Delightful--A View of the Temple serv'd by Eunuchs, & of the delicious Round Island it stands upon". This refers to an area in the Chinese emperor's summer palace at Gehol (sometimes spelled Jehol; modern name Chengde), about 106 miles north of Beijing.
